Walleyes are optimally caught in the spring. Beginning springtime they start to spawn, in addition you have a chance to hook many walleyes as the water begins to warm. During this time of year, the best place to catch walleyes is close to the shore. Sandy areas several feet from the shore are where the fish can spawn, and are often the best fishing spots. Before you go fishing, be aware of the water temperatures. To catch these females successfully, a good tactic is slow trolling as near as you can get to the banks or shoreline. Weeds are also a sign that you’re in an area likely to be populated with walleye. Twelve pounds is not an unusual size for the female walleye. Most fishers, however, would be delighted to land one that is ten pounds. If you will only be satisfied by bringing home a prize walleye, than make your plans to do some night fishing. That’s the optimum time to find these trophies. It’s also one way of reducing anxiousness from all the constraints I came across regularly in my ultrasound technician tasks.
It’s not an old-wives tale that you can be more productive in you fishing if you pay attention to the moon’s phases. Check out the current Farmer’s Almanac for more information. It’s common knowledge that the moon has strong effects on the tides. Since walleye live in the water, this only makes sense that they would be affected as well. Habitually, walleye spawn when the moon is in its full or its new moon phase. So plan your night fishing expeditions at these times of the month. Walleye also tend to be more vigorous when the moon is in these particular phases, which makes them more apt to “attack” your lure. Early evening is always a good time to go walleye fishing, but this is especially true during the new moon and full moon phases, as the moon rises.
